About Robert
Meet Robert, the ultimate lap cat.
Robert is a gentle-hearted Domestic Shorthair cat that has had his fair share of life experiences in his 7 and a half year old life.
Robert came to the shelter as a scared and timid stray, and has since been placed in a quiet and loving foster home where he has had the opportunity to bloom.
Although initially quite shy, Bobby (as his foster mum likes to call him) is a love bug at heart and is looking for a relaxed and caring home to call his own, complete with warm laps and lots of food.
Robert needs a quiet corner, with minimal traffic and a comfortable bed, to feel safe and secure when he first comes home with you. But it won't take long for Robert to venture beyond his sanctuary when head scratches (particularly chin scratches), food and cuddles are on offer.
Once he gets to know and trust you, Robert will prove to be the sweetest cat around, showing his affection with sweet head bunts, belly flops (when you rub the base of his tail) and an adorable purr the sound of slowly boiling water.
Although a middle aged gentleman, Robert loves a good play and will leap, chase and pounce at his favourite string-based toys with glee.
These days, Robert is spending most of his time on the lap of his foster mum while she works from home. She says:
"Robert is one of the sweetest, most gentle cats I've ever met, and the best work from home companion around. Most mornings I enter my home office to find Robert waiting for me to start work on my work chair, or in the middle of the room ready for his wet food. As soon as I come back from a walk or the bathroom Robert leaps back onto my lap where he settles in for a long day of napping and purring, with the occasional break for some playing.
Robert loooooveess food and will eagerly follow you for a good treat. He also adores being brushed and will come and bunt you firmly when you hold his brush to signal that it's time for him to sit on your lap and purr while you brush.
Although Robert is inclined to stay in his safe room, he is slowly getting more comfortable exploring the rest of the apartment and I have lots of faith that with more time, lots of love and all the treats Robert will eventually get used to having all the space he wants to play."
When Robert came to the shelter he had something called peridontal disease. This is where there are dental pockets around the tooth rot which is caused by bacteria, and affects the ligaments and bones around the root of the tooth. The shelter vets have since taken out the bad teeth and given the rest a good clean, so Robert has no issues eating his delicious dry food or snacks. To keep his teeth in good shape, it is best that he gets a yearly dental check ups and continues on a good dental diet.
Robert is currently on medication to help him relax in his new foster home, and he may need this long-term or at least for the first few months of settling into your home. Ongoing treatment would be a decision made in consultation with a vet.
Robert has also recovered from cat flu, which is similar to what humans have but a feline-only strain so there is no need to worry about you or your family getting sick. However, though recovered, Robert will always be a carrier and might show symptoms in times of stress (although he has had none in foster care) and should be taken to a vet for a check up if he shows any flu-like symptoms.
Given his shy nature, and as he is FIV positive, Robert would thrive best in a quiet and calm household where his owners are around often to shower him with love so that he can do the same in return. A home with no children or other animals is best, so he can show you his warm and gentle nature at his own pace.
